HAIRY CELL LEUKEMIA
It is cancer of white blood cell in which B lymphocyte a type of w.b.c start growing abnormally in the body.
These cells look hairy under microscope so it’s called as hairy cell leukemia.
It’s a slow growing cancer
CAUSE of HAIRY CELL LEUKEMIA
Hairy cell leukemia happen when DNA of B-cells develops changes and these changes leads to overproduction of abnormal B-cell in body.
Exact cause what leads to these changes is not know yet but there are some risk factor which increase tendency of this cancer in people.
These factors are:
- Male
- Older people above 50 year are at higher risk
- Family history of cancer
- Being white
SYMPTOMS of HAIRY CELL Cancer
- Fever
- Loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Easily and recurrent infections
- Bruising easily, bleeding from nose
- Difficulty in breathing / shortness of breath
- Weakness, fatigue due to anemia
- Left side of abdomen below ribs having feeling of fullness and pain
- Lump around neck, underarms, stomach and groin region usually painful
DIAGNOSIS of HAIRY CELL LEUKEMIA:
- Physical examination
- Complete blood count
- Peripheral blood smear – check blood cell under microscope look for tiny hairy projection in cell
- Bone marrow aspiration/ biopsy
- CT-scan – to examine size of spleen, liver, lymph nodes
- Flow cytometry- Measures the No. Of cell and cell characteristics of cell such as size, shape
